Piling wrap for docks and boat lifts

Wrapping a sound piling protects it from marine borers and rot. Wrapping a piling that is already eaten through only hides the problem.

We check each piling first, wrap the sound ones, and tell you which ones need replacing.

How we wrap a piling

The same steps on every piling.

  1. Inspect

Sound, damaged, or soft at the waterline. Only sound pilings get wrapped.

  2. Clean

Growth and barnacles come off where the wrap goes.

  3. Wrap

The wrap runs from below the mudline to above high tide.

  4. Seal the ends

Bands at the top and bottom hold it tight.

Signs a piling needs attention

  • Narrowing or an hourglass shape near the waterline.
  • Soft wood when you press on it.
  • Holes or tunnels in the wood.
  • The dock or lift moving more than it used to.
  • An old wrap that is torn or loose.

Good to know

Marine borers are small animals that tunnel into wood that sits in salt water. From the outside a piling can look fine while the inside is hollowed out.

The damage is usually worst around the waterline and through the tide range, which is the zone a wrap is meant to cover.

Questions about piling wrap

How long does a wrap last?

It depends on the product, the water, and the install. We tell you what the maker says about the wrap we use.

Can you wrap the pilings under my boat lift?

Yes, lift pilings and dock pilings both.

What if a piling is already damaged?

A damaged piling gets replaced first. We show you which ones and put them in the estimate.

Is a wrap the same as replacing a piling?

No. A wrap protects a sound piling. A piling that is already damaged needs to be replaced, and the estimate says which ones.
